KOLLAM: A bizarre streetlight malfunction in Kollam city is causing serious inconvenience and safety hazards — lights remain switched off at night when needed and blaze wastefully during the day when not.
Key areas like the second entrance of Kollam railway station, which witnesses constant foot traffic even after midnight, plunge into darkness every night. Commuters navigating this stretch have reported close encounters with snakes, and fear accidents in the unlit zone.
Conversely, in broad daylight, areas like Kadappakkada receive unnecessary illumination from streetlights that remain inexplicably on, wasting power and public money.
The stretch in front of Craven School along the Kollam–Thirumangalam national highway also becomes pitch dark after shops close, leaving pedestrians at risk. Similarly, bus passengers waiting on the Kottarakkara–Punalur route are forced to stand in the dark, vulnerable to stray dog attacks and the mischief of antisocial elements.
Residents across these neighbourhoods allege that their repeated complaints have fallen on deaf ears. Despite multiple reminders to civic authorities, the issue persists, with no timeline for resolution in sight.
Locals are now urging the municipal administration and electricity board to act swiftly and restore proper streetlight functioning — during the right time of day.
