A shocking case of domestic violence in Kerala’s Kozhikode district ended in tragedy after a 32-year-old woman, who was brutally attacked by her husband earlier this week, succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at a hospital.

The victim, whose identity has been withheld, was admitted in critical condition after she was allegedly hacked multiple times by her husband following a domestic dispute. Despite sustained medical intervention, she died on Saturday, police officials confirmed.

Attack following domestic dispute

According to police, the incident occurred at the couple’s residence in Kozhikode district. Following a heated argument, the accused husband allegedly attacked the woman with a sharp weapon, inflicting severe injuries. Neighbours rushed to her aid after hearing screams and alerted the police.

She was initially taken to a nearby hospital and later shifted to the Government Medical College Kozhikode due to the seriousness of her condition. Doctors said she had suffered extensive blood loss and multiple deep wounds.

Case registered as murder

After the woman’s death, police registered a case of murder against the husband. Officers from Kerala Police said the accused has been taken into custody and further investigation is underway to establish the sequence of events leading to the fatal attack.

Police sources said preliminary inquiries indicate a history of frequent domestic quarrels between the couple. Statements from relatives, neighbours and other witnesses are being recorded as part of the probe.

Community in shock

The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, with residents expressing anguish over yet another instance of domestic violence turning fatal. Women’s rights activists and social organisations have reiterated the urgent need for early intervention, counselling and stronger support systems for victims facing abuse within households.

Officials noted that complaints related to domestic violence must be reported promptly so that preventive action can be taken before disputes escalate into irreversible tragedies.

Call for awareness and support

Authorities and social workers have urged women facing domestic abuse to seek help through local police stations, women’s helplines and legal aid services. They stressed that timely reporting and community awareness can play a crucial role in preventing such crimes.

The case adds to growing concerns over domestic violence incidents in Kerala, highlighting the need for sustained awareness campaigns and strict enforcement of laws aimed at protecting women.
