A Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) driver was found dead by hanging after leaving his bus parked by the roadside during a trip, shocking passengers and colleagues alike.
Driver leaves bus on highway
The deceased has been identified as Babu (45), a native of Chathamangalam at Nenmara in Palakkad district and a resident of Namboothiripparambu House. He was driving a KSRTC fast passenger bus from Ernakulam to Palakkad on Sunday.
According to preliminary information, Babu parked the bus on the side of the national highway near the Paliyekkara toll plaza and stepped out midway through the journey. When he failed to return for a prolonged period, concerns were raised.
Body found under Manali bridge
Later, Babu was found dead by hanging beneath the Manali bridge, a short distance from where the bus had been parked. Police were alerted and reached the spot, confirming the death.
The reasons behind Babu’s actions are not yet known. Police said further investigation is under way to determine the circumstances that led to the incident.
Passengers shifted safely
After realising that the driver had not returned, the conductor took charge of the situation, ensured passenger safety, and arranged for them to continue their journey in another KSRTC bus.
Officials said there was no injury reported among passengers, and the incident did not lead to any major traffic disruption on the highway.
Probe underway
Police have registered a case and are examining all angles, including personal and professional factors. Statements from KSRTC staff and others who may have interacted with Babu before the incident are being recorded.
KSRTC officials expressed shock over the incident and said necessary support would be extended to the family. More details are expected after the post-mortem and completion of the preliminary investigation.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns around mental health, stress, and emotional well-being among public transport workers, who often operate under demanding conditions.
