A woman and her child were tragically buried alive in a landslide that struck a village in Manipur’s Tamenglong district, officials reported.

On Monday night, a landslide triggered debris to collapse onto the home of Ringsinlung Kahmei, a constable with the Manipur Police. The landslide instantly claimed the lives of his wife and child, while Kahmei himself was critically injured.

Due to his severe injuries, Kahmei was airlifted to Imphal on Tuesday for advanced medical treatment, officials stated.

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh expressed his condolences on Twitter: “I am deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a mother and her child in the landslide that occurred last night in Dimthanlong village, Tamenglong Ward No. 3.”

He added, “My heart goes out to the grieving family. Our thoughts are with Mr. Ringsinlung Kahmei, who has been critically injured. We are taking swift action to ensure he receives the necessary medical care and treatment.”

Landslides and mudslides are common during the monsoon season in Manipur’s hilly areas, with Tamenglong district being particularly prone to such natural disasters.
