Mumbai: At least two people have died and several others are feared trapped after a landslip struck a chawl in Kurla West during the early hours of Wednesday. Rescue operations are underway, involving the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mumbai Fire Brigade, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Mumbai Police.
Debris crashes into chawl houses
The incident occurred around 3:48 am at Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar, near Rathod Medical in Kurla West. Soil and debris from a hillside reportedly collapsed onto two to three houses, causing casualties and property damage.
According to a BMC official, witnesses initially reported that six to eight people could be trapped beneath the debris. The narrow approach to the site has made the rescue operation particularly challenging.
Two young victims identified
The deceased have been identified as Sohel Ansari, 18, and Mohamad Ansari, 14. Both were taken to Rajawadi Hospital. Mohamad was declared brought dead, while Sohel suffered head injuries.
A later update from the Deputy Chief Fire Brigade indicated that four members of a family had died, while two people remained trapped under the debris. Rescue teams continued efforts to reach those still believed to be buried.
Mayor announces financial assistance
Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawade visited the site and reviewed the rescue operation. She announced ₹4 lakh assistance for the next of kin of each deceased person and ₹50,000 for each injured person.
She also met affected families and directed officials to accelerate relief and rescue efforts.
Around 50 BMC personnel, along with NDRF and fire brigade teams, are involved in the operation. Authorities remain focused on locating and rescuing anyone still trapped .
