Bijnor (UP): A tense situation unfolded in Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor district on Friday when a leopard wandered into the premises of Issopur Primary School in the Haldaur area, causing panic among the staff. The unexpected arrival of the wild animal forced the teachers to seek refuge inside a classroom, locking themselves in for safety until local villagers managed to drive the leopard away.

Incident at Issopur Primary School
Issopur Primary School, like many other institutions in the area, had closed for the day due to heavy rainfall. Despite the closure, teachers arrived at the school to fulfil their duties. However, their day took a frightening turn when they heard the distinct roar of a leopard nearby. The headteacher, Seema Rajput, described the terrifying experience, recounting how she and the other staff members quickly sought shelter in one of the rooms.

According to Rajput, the leopard even attempted to claw its way into the room, intensifying the fear among the trapped staff. “We could hear its roars clearly, and then it started scratching at the door. It was an extremely scary experience,” she said.

Villagers to the Rescue
The presence of the leopard was first detected by the school cook, who promptly informed the locals. The villagers, upon hearing the news, rushed to the school in an effort to help. Realising the danger posed by the leopard, they began making loud noises to scare the animal away. Their efforts proved successful, as the frightened leopard eventually retreated back into the nearby forest.

The quick response of the local villagers prevented what could have been a more serious situation, as the leopard’s proximity to the school staff posed a significant threat.

Future Safety Measures
The incident has raised concerns over the safety of students and school staff in areas near forests and wildlife habitats. Basic Education Officer Yogendra Kumar has assured the public that steps will be taken to prevent such occurrences in the future. Kumar stated that discussions with the forest department would take place to implement concrete safety measures for both students and teachers.

“We will work closely with the forest department to ensure that schools located near forested areas have adequate protection against such incidents,” said Kumar. The installation of additional security features, such as fencing and regular patrols, are among the proposed measures.

Growing Leopard Sightings in the Region
This incident is not an isolated one. The Haldaur area and other regions near forests in Uttar Pradesh have seen an increase in leopard sightings in recent years. As urban areas expand and encroach on natural habitats, encounters between humans and wildlife have become more frequent. The leopards, in search of food and territory, often stray into populated areas, posing a risk to human safety.

Local authorities and wildlife officials are continuously monitoring the situation, but balancing the needs of conservation with the safety of residents remains a challenge.

Conclusion
Friday’s incident at Issopur Primary School highlights the growing risk of human-wildlife conflicts in areas bordering forests. Fortunately, no one was harmed in this instance, but the need for robust safety measures is clear. As schools like Issopur continue their operations, the involvement of local authorities and the forest department will be crucial in ensuring the safety of all.
