In a heartening development, over 100 tribal families in Bommadu village near Kanur in Madikeri have finally been connected to the power grid after three decades of waiting. The long-overdue electrification was made possible by the persistent efforts of Virajpet MLA A.S. Ponnanna, fulfilling a promise he made during his visit two years ago.
For nearly 30 years, the Jenu Kuruba tribal community and Scheduled Caste households in Bommadu survived on a Union government solar scheme that provided two lights per home. Over time, the solar systems deteriorated, plunging the village back into darkness. Despite repeated pleas, no concrete action was taken—until now.
Ponnanna, during his pre-election visit, vowed to resolve the issue, and true to his word, he oversaw the installation of new transformers and the provision of electricity to every household in the area. The move brought visible joy and relief to villagers who had lived without basic power access for generations.
JA Somaiah, a local leader, said, “The MLA has fulfilled a decades-old demand. We are content.” Residents expressed their deep appreciation during the commissioning of the new power infrastructure.
MLA Ponnanna stated, “Electricity is a basic right. We promised, and we delivered. My focus remains on electrifying tribal settlements along forest borders.”
