New Delhi: The Lokpal of India has issued an official tender to procure seven high-end BMW 3 Series 330 Li cars, each valued at nearly Rs 70 lakh, taking the total estimated cost close to Rs 5 crore. CNN-News18 has accessed a copy of the tender document dated October 16, which outlines the specifications, delivery timelines, and training requirements for the vehicles.
The Lokpal presently consists of a chairperson and six other members, making it a seven-member body. According to the tender document, “The Lokpal of India invites open tenders from reputed Agencies for supply of seven BMW 3 Series 330 Li Cars to the Lokpal of India,” specifying the required model as Sport (Long Wheelbase) in white colour.
Delivery timeline and specifications
The tender mandates that the cars be delivered to the Lokpal office in Delhi’s Vasant Kunj Institutional Area within two weeks, but not later than 30 days from the issuance of the supply order. The BMW 3 Series Long Wheelbase, launched in India earlier this year, is touted by the manufacturer as the most spacious in its segment, offering the most luxurious rear seat experience for passengers.
With a long wheelbase, the car promises ample legroom and comfort for rear-seat passengers, making it suitable for official use by senior public functionaries. The market on-road price of each vehicle is around Rs 70 lakh, which makes the total cost for seven vehicles approximately Rs 4.9 crore.
Training for staff
The tender also specifies that the selected vendor must conduct a comprehensive practical and theoretical training programme for the drivers and other designated staff of the Lokpal. The training is aimed at ensuring the safe, efficient, and optimal operation of the BMW vehicles. According to the document, the training should last a minimum of seven days and must be completed within 15 days of vehicle delivery, with the exact schedule to be finalised in consultation with the Lokpal authorities.
About the Lokpal
The Lokpal of India was established under the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013, to investigate allegations of corruption against public officials falling within its ambit. The institution comprises a chairperson and eight members, four of whom are judicial members. The chairperson’s salary and allowances are equivalent to those of the Chief Justice of India, while the members receive compensation on par with Supreme Court judges.
The procurement of luxury BMW vehicles for the Lokpal has drawn attention due to the high cost and the institution’s role as India’s top anti-corruption body. The move aims to provide senior officials with safe, reliable, and comfortable transportation for official duties while adhering to high standards of vehicle operation and staff training.
