Hours-long power cuts have triggered public anger in Nagpur as temperatures cross 44°C and summer electricity demand surges.

Residents across multiple neighbourhoods said repeated outages are affecting daily life, with senior citizens, children and patients facing the greatest hardship.

City under pressure

The crisis has placed focus on Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited, which citizens say is struggling to handle peak load conditions.

While officials reportedly cited technical faults in some areas, many residents described a wider pattern of routine and unannounced disruptions.

Families suffer in extreme heat

Residents from areas including Shiv Nagar, Godhani, Civil Lines, Ramdaspeth, Besa, Narendra Nagar and Trimurti Nagar said electricity cuts lasted for hours during both day and night.

Many said homes felt like ovens during outages, making sleep, cooking and basic comfort difficult.

Elderly and sick worst hit

Families said senior citizens and people with medical conditions were suffering badly in the heat.

Some residents complained that those needing fans, coolers, refrigeration for medicines or constant care were being placed at risk.

Utility cites technical issues

Power officials reportedly acknowledged feeder faults in certain localities and said some prolonged outages were linked to technical problems.

However, citizens alleged poor planning and lack of accountability as complaints spread across the city.

Bigger summer concern

With May heat still ahead, concerns are growing over whether the city’s distribution network can cope if temperatures rise further.

The situation has reignited debate over urban infrastructure resilience during extreme weather
