In a deeply moving story of compassion and perseverance, a woman who went missing more than 12 years ago has been reunited with her three sons from Parbhani, thanks to the sustained efforts of the Mumbai Police.
Separated in a crowded city
According to officials, the woman had travelled to Mumbai with her family over a decade ago. During the visit, she was separated from her relatives amid the city’s crowds. Despite repeated attempts, her family was unable to trace her, and after years of searching, her sons eventually returned to their native place in Parbhani, believing their mother was lost forever.
Chance encounter during routine drive
The breakthrough came on January 13, when a team from JJ Marg Police Station was conducting a routine drive involving beggars and homeless persons near JJ Junction. Officers noticed an elderly woman in her seventies begging on the roadside. She appeared frail, confused and mentally distressed, and was unable to give clear answers.
Under the supervision of senior inspector Rais Shaikh, police personnel gently assisted her, providing food and care. Repeatedly, she said only one line: “My name is Godavari. I am lost.”
NGO support unlocks vital clue
Following legal procedures and a court order, she was shifted to a shelter home in Chembur. With limited information available, police sought help from Koshish, an NGO working with homeless persons. During counselling sessions, the woman mentioned Selu in Parbhani district — a crucial lead.
A check with Selu police station revealed a missing person complaint filed 12 years ago that matched her description.
Tears of reunion
Her three sons were contacted and shown photographs shared by Mumbai Police. The moment they recognised her, emotions overflowed. They immediately travelled to Mumbai with fresh clothes and food for their mother.
After completing formalities, police reunited the family. The reunion, witnessed by officers and staff, was filled with tears of relief and joy — a reminder that patience, empathy and teamwork can restore lives even after years of separation.
