New Delhi: The Government of India has appointed Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth as the next Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), marking a significant leadership transition in the Indian Army. He will assume office on June 30, 2026, succeeding General Upendra Dwivedi, who is scheduled to retire on the same day.

The appointment was approved by the President of India and announced through an official communication from the Ministry of Defence. Lt Gen Seth will hold the substantive rank of General and is expected to serve as Army Chief until August 31, 2028.

The appointment comes at a time when the Indian Army continues to focus on force modernisation, operational preparedness and capability enhancement across multiple theatres.

Government announces appointment

According to the Ministry of Defence, Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth, PVSM, UYSM and AVSM, will formally take over as the Army Chief from June 30.

The official order stated that the appointment was approved by the President and would take effect immediately upon the retirement of General Upendra Dwivedi.

Currently serving as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff, Lt Gen Seth assumed the role earlier this year and has been involved in overseeing key strategic and operational matters within the Army.

His elevation to the top military post reflects a distinguished career spanning nearly four decades.

Career rooted in operational excellence

An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Lt Gen Seth was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986.

Throughout his military career, he has held a wide range of operational, command and strategic appointments across different regions of the country.

His command assignments include leading an Armoured Regiment in the Desert Sector, an Armoured Brigade in the Western Theatre and a Counter-Insurgency Force in Jammu and Kashmir.

These postings provided him with extensive experience in conventional warfare, counter-insurgency operations and leadership in challenging environments.

Military observers regard his diverse operational exposure as one of the key strengths he brings to the position of Army Chief.

Commanded major Army formations

As a Lieutenant General, Seth commanded the prestigious Sudarshan Chakra Corps, one of the Indian Army’s premier strike formations.

He later served as General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area, where he oversaw important military engagements, ceremonial responsibilities and coordination of strategic events involving national and international stakeholders.

His leadership responsibilities expanded further upon his elevation to Army Commander.

Lt Gen Seth subsequently commanded both the South Western Command and Southern Command, becoming one of the few senior officers to lead two operational Army Commands.

This distinction reflects the confidence placed in his leadership abilities and strategic judgement at the highest levels of military command.

Key role in Army modernisation

Apart from his operational achievements, Lt Gen Seth has played an important role in shaping the Indian Army’s modernisation efforts.

During his tenure at Army Headquarters, he held several strategic appointments linked to planning, force restructuring and capability development.

He was closely involved in formulating long-term plans aimed at enhancing the Army’s combat effectiveness, technological capabilities and future readiness.

Officials have credited him with contributing significantly to capability development initiatives and modernisation programmes designed to prepare the force for emerging security challenges.

His experience in strategic planning is expected to be a major asset as the Army continues its transformation initiatives in the coming years.

Leadership transition at a crucial time

Lt Gen Seth takes over the Army’s top post at a time when India’s military leadership is focused on strengthening operational preparedness, enhancing indigenous defence capabilities and adapting to evolving geopolitical and security challenges.

As Army Chief, he will be responsible for overseeing one of the world’s largest military forces and guiding its strategic direction over the next two years.

Defence analysts believe his extensive operational background, command experience and involvement in modernisation initiatives position him well to lead the Army through its next phase of development.

With nearly 40 years of distinguished service behind him, Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth now prepares to assume one of the most important military leadership roles in the country, succeeding General Upendra Dwivedi and continuing the Indian Army’s focus on readiness, reform and modernisation.
