Bhopal: The Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, is scheduled to travel to Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, to support the BJP’s candidate, Vivek Bunty Sahu, on Tuesday.

Shah’s itinerary includes a substantial roadshow followed by a public rally in the evening.

Reports suggest that he will be staying overnight in Chhindwara to strategize on securing the lone Lok Sabha constituency in the state, which the BJP won only once before, in 1977, under ex-CM Sunder Lal Patwa. However, the Congress regained it in a by-election after a year.

Chhindwara has historically been a stronghold of Congress stalwart Kamal Nath, who represented the tribal-dominated seat nine times, with his wife also serving as an MP once.

In 2019, Kamal Nath’s son, Nakul Nath, succeeded him in the Lok Sabha election after he became the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, maintaining the family’s grip on the constituency.

Nakul Nath is now contesting his second Lok Sabha election, facing competition not only from BJP’s Vivek Bunty Sahu but also from a well-organized BJP machinery spanning from the state to the national level.

The BJP is resolute in capturing the final bastion of the Congress in Madhya Pradesh, prompting intense competition. In pursuit of this goal, the ruling party has severed ties with several of Kamal Nath’s allies, including his loyalist and former minister, Deepak Saxena.

Despite securing 28 out of 29 Lok Sabha seats in Madhya Pradesh during the 2019 general elections, the BJP failed to clinch victory in the Chhindwara constituency.

Amit Shah’s visit to Chhindwara comes shortly after allegations surfaced regarding the involvement of Kamal Nath’s associate, R K Miglani, and a television journalist in a purported scheme to circulate an inappropriate video of BJP candidate Vivek Bunty Sahu.
