Bhopal: In a harrowing incident, a 30-year-old woman was reportedly raped at least three times during a 40-km journey on a moving train in Madhya Pradesh’s Satna district. Despite the trauma, the survivor demonstrated immense courage, fighting back against her attacker and managing to escape, half-clad and barefoot.

Sequence of Events

The survivor alighted from her train and entered the AC coach of another train to use the washroom. The suspect, identified as Kamlesh Kushwaha, also on the passenger train, followed her and locked the doors. As the special train started moving between Pakaria and Maihar railway stations, he assaulted and raped her multiple times.

The survivor, in her police complaint, revealed that the assailant hit her from behind, causing her to fall on the floor and sustain a head injury. Despite her resistance, the assailant continued the assault, threatening to kill her if she resisted further.

During a station halt, the survivor seized an opportunity to escape. She pleaded with the assailant that she was thirsty, and when he left to fetch water, she jumped off the train and began running. In her haste, she left behind her saree, sandals, and bag.

Pursuit and Arrest

Seeking help, the survivor reached an RPF (Railway Protection Force) constable at Satna station. The constable immediately pursued the assailant, who had returned to the special train. The constable boarded the train, but the assailant locked the AC coach from inside.

Despite the locked coach, the constable alerted railway police and continued to follow the train. The train was eventually stopped at Kaima railway station, and a mechanical team was deployed to open the locked door. The assailant was apprehended around 11:30 am when the train reached Rewa railway station.

The swift action of the survivor, the RPF constable, and the coordinated efforts of railway police played a crucial role in apprehending the assailant. The survivor’s resilience and the subsequent arrest underscore the challenges women face during travel and the importance of prompt response and law enforcement in addressing such crimes.
