The Congress claimed on Monday that former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath will take part in the state’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, which is being led by Rahul Gandhi, and dismissed as “misinformation” the rumors that the party leader may join the BJP.
The claim was made by Jitendra Singh, the general secretary of the Congress and person in charge of Madhya Pradesh, amid rumors that Kamal Nath and his son Nakul Nath, a member of the Lok Sabha, might defect to the BJP.

“Kamal Nath ji is a senior leader of our party. All these speculations have been made by the BJP and the media. I spoke to him yesterday and the day before yesterday also and we discussed the preparations of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra,” Singh told reporters at the Congress headquarters here.

“I am going to Bhopal tomorrow and meetings are taking place with MLAs, various committees and MPs. Kamal Nath ji will also join those meetings and his suggestions for the yatra’s passage will be taken note of. Kamal Nath will prominently participate in the Yatra in Madhya Pradesh,” the Congress general secretary said.

Pressed further about the speculation that Nath and his son may cross over to the BJP, Singh reiterated that “all this is speculation” and alleged that the BJP always attempts to “spread wrong news and misinformation”.

He said Kamal Nath will “100 per cent” participate in the Nyay Yatra when it enters the state later this month. “The preparations for the yatra are on, he (Nath) is participating in that,” Singh said.

When asked about Nakul Nath, the MP for Chhindwara, Singh replied that he is a party member and will take part in the yatra.

During his brief interview with reporters here on Saturday afternoon, Kamal Nath asked them not to get too excited about his arrival in Delhi. When inquired about his intention to join the BJP, Nath responded, “If there would be any such thing, I would inform you first.” Kamal Nath is a shrewd politician who has collaborated with three Gandhi generations. He was referred to as Indira Gandhi’s third son in 1979, when she was the prime minister.

It is reported that Mr. Nath is upset about not being elected to the Rajya Sabha. Furthermore, it’s known that Rahul Gandhi is angry with him because the Congress lost the Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections towards the end of last year.

Following the Congress’s crushing defeat in the Assembly elections, where the BJP maintained its majority by securing 163 seats in the 230-member House, Mr. Nath was replaced as the head of the party’s Madhya Pradesh unit. It took the Congress just 66 seats to win.
