The six-year-old boy who fell into an open borewell in the Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh two days ago died on Sunday, despite the coordinated efforts of several agencies to save him.
The incident happened on Friday at around 3 p.m. in Manika village, close to the Uttar Pradesh border, while the child was playing by the open borewell. Official statements state that he became trapped inside the borewell at a depth of about forty feet.
To rescue the boy from the borewell, the State Disaster Emergency Response Force, National Disaster Response, and local government worked together. The 70-foot-deep borewell was filled with oxygen, and in order to reach him, parallel pits had to be dug.
“As soon as we received information, the station in charge and SDM reached the spot…All senior officials are present on the spot and rescue work is going on. Two JCBs, a team of cameramen, and an SDRF team are carrying out the rescue. An NDRF team was also dispatched from Varanasi,” Additional Superintendent of Police Anil Sonkar said.
In order to keep an eye on the boy’s condition, a CCTV camera was also lowered; however, the police claimed that an obstruction prevented them from getting to him. The Rewa collector Pratibha Pal shared a video on X showing the officials attempting to find the boy using the CCTV system.
Pal reported that following 40 hours of search and rescue work, the child was found on Sunday. Around eight in the morning, the boy was found. The borewell was too small, so despite our best efforts, we were unable to save the child,” she told reporters.
The body was sent to a hospital for postmortem, she added.
