Madurai: In a tragic turn to the shocking medical negligence case of a pregnant woman being transfused HIV infected blood, 19-year-old man whose blood was transfused to the lady died after attempting suicide.
It is said that thought the teenager consumed poison on Wednesday to end life, he battled for life at Rajaji Government Hospital in Madurai for four days and died on Sunday. He was initially taken to Ramanathapuram Government Hospital and was later transferred to Madurai Government Hospital for extensive treatment.
The young man was unaware of his medical condition when he donated blood. He found out that he was HIV positive during a routine check-up for visa processing.
He informed about donating infected blood but by then his blood had already been transfused into the 23-year-old pregnant woman.
The lady is undergoing antiretroviral therapy (ART), a method that will keep the virus low in the blood and stop it from getting converted into AIDS.
Meanwhile, the state government has assured treatment to the pregnant woman and her unborn child.
