A moderate earthquake of magnitude 5.7 struck the northwestern Kashmir region on Sunday morning, with tremors reported from the Leh–Ladakh area, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).
Epicentre in seismically active Himalayan belt
The NCS said the earthquake occurred at 11.51 am IST. Its epicentre was located in the Leh–Ladakh region at a depth of 171 km, placing it within the highly sensitive Himalayan seismic zone.
In an official post on X, the NCS confirmed the quake’s coordinates and advised citizens to remain alert, noting the possibility of aftershocks.
No casualties or damage so far
Authorities said there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property. Local administrations across the region are monitoring the situation closely and have urged residents to remain cautious.
Given the depth of the earthquake, officials said ground shaking was relatively limited compared to shallow quakes, which are generally considered more destructive due to stronger surface impact.
Part of heightened regional seismic activity
The latest tremor comes just a day after a separate earthquake of magnitude 4.1 struck Afghanistan, underlining increased seismic activity across the broader Himalayan and Hindu Kush belt.
NCS data shows that Afghanistan has experienced multiple tremors in recent days, including a magnitude 4.2 earthquake on January 15 at a depth of 96 km, and another of magnitude 3.8 on January 14 at a depth of 90 km.
Experts urge preparedness
Seismologists reiterate that the Himalayan region remains one of the most earthquake-prone zones in the world due to tectonic plate movement. While deep earthquakes like Sunday’s usually cause less surface damage, authorities continue to stress preparedness and adherence to safety advisories.
Emergency response teams remain on standby as officials await further updates.
