Mumbai: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated senior public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam for Mumbai North Central constituency replacing incumbent MP Poonam Mahajan, daughter of the late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan.
Nikam, a distinguished public prosecutor, has been involved in numerous high-profile cases, including the 26/11 Mumbai attacks and the 1993 Bombay bombings, the Gulshan Kumar murder case, and the murder case of Poonam’s father and BJP leader Pramod Mahajan. He will compete against Varsha Gaikwad, the Congress city unit chief and Dharavi MLA.
Expressing his views on entering politics, Nikam stated, “I view politics not as a battleground but as a platform for social service and national duty. I am privileged to serve the nation through politics and will embrace this new endeavor wholeheartedly.”
The decision to replace Mahajan was influenced by organizational feedback, claim party leaders. Mahajan, who won the seat in 2014 and 2019, thanked the party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the opportunity to serve the constituency for a decade.
In her response, Mahajan expressed gratitude to the people of Mumbai North Central, likening their support to that of a family. She pledged to uphold her late father Pramod Mahajan’s principle of ‘Nation first, then us’ and dedicated herself to the service of the nation.
