At a rented house in Mumbai’s Borivali neighborhood on Thursday night, a woman receiving mental health treatment attempted suicide by slitting her wrist with a knife and strangled her 11-year-old daughter to death with a dupatta.
The woman’s husband reportedly reported the incident to the Kasturba Police Station, and officers responded quickly. The daughter was found lying close to her mother with a dupatta around her neck, and the woman was discovered by the police officers lying on the ground in a pool of blood.
The woman had been receiving mental health treatment for ten years at two hospitals in Andheri and Baroda, according to the officials, and had missed three days of medication.
According to the police, the 46-year-old Rekha was still alive when she started receiving treatment, but the daughter, 11-year-old Ruhaani Solanki, was pronounced dead when she arrived at the Shatabdi hospital.
The father was sitting in the living room of their three-bedroom apartment when the incident occurred on Thursday night at 10:30 p.m., police said. The mother had locked herself and her daughter in a room.
The local shop owner’s father reported to the police that he heard his daughter yell and scream, accusing her mother of trying to harm her. After a while, he claimed, the screams stopped and nobody was opening the door. Police have launched an investigation into the incident and have started recording statements of the woman and her husband.
“We have registered a case under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code against the woman. Further investigation is on,” said a senior officer from Kasturba Marg Police Station.
One of the residents of the apartment, seeking anonymity, said, “They looked like a regular family. In fact, at a recent event hosted by the housing society, the daughter performed and seemed like a cheerful girl. Last evening, she was walking her pet downstairs. Whatever has happened is shocking.”
