Bristy Mukherjee, the 28-year-old niece of Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was found dead at her home in Birbhum on Tuesday, police said.
Mukherjee was found hanging inside a room on the second floor of her house in Kusumba village in the Rampurhat area, according to a senior police officer. The police are treating the death as a suspected suicide while investigating the circumstances surrounding it.
Police begin investigation
The body was recovered from the house in the afternoon and sent for post-mortem examination.
A senior police officer said the exact circumstances leading to Mukherjee’s death would be established after the post-mortem and other procedural inquiries. Police are continuing their investigation into the case.
Family speaks about her health
Family members said Mukherjee had reportedly been undergoing divorce proceedings at the time of her death.
They also said she had been dealing with depression for the past few years and was receiving treatment.
Mukherjee’s father, Nihar Mukherjee, is Mamata Banerjee’s maternal cousin and a local TMC leader.
The investigation remains underway, with police expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the death after completing the post-mortem and other inquiries.
