A 25-year-old suspect was apprehended on Monday for allegedly robbing a mobile phone from a couple at knife threat near the Central bus stand in Trichy.

Police stated that G Mohan, 29, a bank employee, and his wife Shobika, residents of North Andal Street, had attended an event in Manapparai. On their way to retrieve their two-wheeler parked near the bus stand early Sunday morning, the suspect confronted them.

The man tried to forcibly grab Shobika’s chain at knifepoint. Mohan intervened and prevented the snatching, but the assailant succeeded in stealing a mobile phone from Mohan’s shirt pocket before fleeing.

Mohan promptly filed a complaint with the Cantonment police, who registered a case under sections 309-4 (robbery) and 311 (robbery causing hurt) of the BNS.

Reviewing CCTV footage from the area helped police identify and arrest the accused, a resident of Pudukkottai district, on Monday. He is currently under interrogation.
