A 59-year-old man sustained injuries in Triplicane, Chennai, after his neighbour allegedly ordered his pet dog to attack him during an argument over access to a public water tap on Sunday night. Police have registered a case and begun an investigation into the incident.

Argument escalates into violence

The victim, Tamilvanan, a resident of Nadukuppam, was drawing water from a public tap in his locality when his neighbour, Ezhil (38), confronted him and objected to his use of the pipe. Tamilvanan reportedly argued that the tap was for public use and that he was entitled to collect water from it.

The disagreement escalated, with Ezhil allegedly hurling abuses before directing his pet dog to attack Tamilvanan. The dog bit him on the leg, causing injuries that required medical attention.

Neighbours intervene; police begin enquiry

Residents in the area rushed to Tamilvanan’s aid and shifted him to the Government Royapettah Hospital, where he received treatment for the dog bite.

The Marina police have since registered a case and are investigating the circumstances leading to the altercation, including claims that the dog was intentionally provoked to attack.

Officials are also expected to review whether the pet was vaccinated and whether the owner complied with local pet-handling and public safety regulations.
