A 47-year-old man allegedly strangled his 75-year-old mother to death in a village under the Banar police station limits of Jodhpur, in a deeply disturbing incident that has shocked the local community. Police officials said preliminary investigations indicate that the accused’s drug addiction may have been the motive behind the crime.

Crime discovered by grandson

The accused, identified as Omprakash Jat, is alleged to have first assaulted his mother, Parmudi Devi, before strangling her with a rope inside their house on Monday. At the time of the incident, only the mother and son were present at home.

The crime came to light when Omprakash’s son, Surendra, returned home later in the day and found the main door locked from inside. After repeated calls and knocking went unanswered, he entered the house through the terrace of a neighbouring building. Inside, he found his grandmother lying dead on a cot, while his father was lying on another cot nearby.

Accused lay beside body, later confessed

Police said the accused allegedly lay beside the body after committing the crime. When officers reached the spot following information from family members and neighbours, Omprakash reportedly confessed to killing his mother.

Senior police officials said initial findings suggest that the accused was addicted to drugs and frequently had altercations at home. However, they added that the exact sequence of events and circumstances leading to the murder will be established after a detailed investigation.

Investigation underway

The body of the elderly woman was sent for post-mortem examination to confirm the cause of death. A case of murder has been registered, and the accused has been taken into custody for further questioning.

Police are also recording statements from family members and neighbours to understand whether there had been previous incidents of violence or disputes in the household. Officials said they are examining the accused’s medical and behavioural history as part of the probe.

Community in shock

The incident has left residents of the village shaken, with neighbours describing the victim as a quiet elderly woman. Many expressed concern over the growing impact of substance abuse in rural areas and its effect on family relationships.

Police officials said further action will be taken based on the post-mortem report and the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
