Mumbai: In an outrageous incident that took place few days ago, a man masturbated at an American woman in broad daylight. The man was arrested by Mumbai police on Wednesday morning after the incident made the headlines and received public outrage through social media.
Gopal Valmiki allegedly masturbated at Maryanna Abdo and when confronted, fled the scene.
“Gopal Valmiki, who is in his late 20s, was apprehended by police in early morning hours,” said Colaba police station senior inspector Vinay Gadgil. The accused has been booked under section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult modesty of a woman) of the IPC, Gadgil added.
The alleged incident had occurred on Monday when the woman was taking a morning walk in the area and the youth allegedly flashed at her, police had said.
Maryanna who managed to capture his photo, tweeted it immediately after the incident. She used the micro-blogging site Twitter to ask for help. In a consequent tweet, she also highlighted the other two men visible in the photo were helpful and responded to her call for help.
She was flooded with responses and her tweet as of now has got 1577 retweets. People also helped her track the location where the incident took place.
When the police asked Abdo why she didn’t approach them, she replied saying he slipped away from her hands and fled. Her tweet opened several doors to the ones who are scared to face such issues bravely. Many had been apologising to Abdo on behalf of India, as a country. In response she explained that it is not the country’s fault and that she loves India.
According to reports, Valmiki works in Colaba area in Mumbai.
