Bengaluru: A workplace dispute shared on Reddit has ignited debate on professional boundaries after an employee alleged that their manager threatened to “destroy” their career over a coworker’s personal Excel spreadsheet containing remarks about colleagues.
The post, titled “Manager threatened my career because of a coworker’s personal notes. What should I do?”, has drawn widespread attention, with social media users urging the employee to document the incident and seek support from the company’s Human Resources (HR) department.
Coworker’s spreadsheet triggers workplace conflict
According to the Reddit post, a female colleague had created a personal Excel sheet listing the names of several employees along with observations about their behaviour. The comments reportedly included allegations such as colleagues “looking at me badly”, “talking behind my back”, and “making inappropriate gestures”.
The employee claimed they had no knowledge of the spreadsheet and played no role in creating or maintaining it.
However, after discovering the document, the manager allegedly confronted the employee instead of the coworker, reportedly because they were seated nearby.
‘He threatened to destroy my career’
The Reddit user alleged that the manager shouted at them and warned that if their name became linked to the issue, he would “destroy” their career.
The employee maintained that they had “absolutely nothing” to do with the spreadsheet and had never encouraged the coworker’s actions. Unsure how to proceed, they sought advice from the Reddit community on whether to approach HR, document the incident or simply distance themselves from the matter.
Internet advises employee to document everything
The post quickly attracted hundreds of responses, with many users recommending that the employee keep written records of all interactions and report the alleged threat through official company channels if necessary.
Others advised requesting a seat change to avoid further involvement, while several commenters criticised the manager’s alleged behaviour, calling it unprofessional and intimidating.
