A first-year MBBS student from Sir JJ Hospital became a victim of extortion after being intimidated by three unidentified individuals in Mumbai’s Dongri on March 5.
The ordeal began when the student finished his meal at a nearby eatery. A man confronted him aggressively, questioning his presence in the area and asserting dominance over the neighborhood. When the student expressed confusion, the man led him into a secluded alley for further confrontation.
Soon, two more men joined in, escalating the threats. They demanded all the cash he had, warning of dire consequences if he failed to comply.
The student, lacking sufficient funds, was pressured to call his father, who promptly transferred ₹5,000 through PhonePe. Still unsatisfied, the assailants coerced him into borrowing another ₹5,000 from a friend. They then forced him to scan a QR code on their payment app, executing four separate transactions to extract the entire ₹10,000.
Shaken by the incident, the student approached Dongri police and detailed his harrowing experience. Authorities have since filed an FIR under IPC sections 308(3), 308(2), and 3(5), launching an inquiry to track down the culprits.
Investigators are analyzing digital payment records and local CCTV footage to identify those responsible. Meanwhile, residents have raised concerns over rising street crimes in the area.
