New Delhi: A brief power outage at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, the busiest airport in India, led to minor disruptions within the terminal on Monday, though flight schedules remained unaffected, according to three sources familiar with the situation reported by Reuters.

The outage, which lasted approximately seven minutes, impacted baggage collection and entry at the e-gates, one source at the airport stated. Managed by GMR Airports, Indira Gandhi International Airport features three terminals handling both commercial and cargo flights.

During the power cut, the terminal’s air conditioning systems temporarily ceased functioning but were quickly restored, the source added.

New Delhi has recently experienced soaring temperatures, hitting record highs. This has been accompanied by water shortages and frequent power outages, exacerbating the difficulties faced by residents.

An airline source, who requested anonymity, mentioned that the power outage might lead to delays in check-in and boarding processes. June is typically a peak period for the aviation industry in India due to the summer break for schools.

Social media posts depicted passengers standing in long queues at check-in counters as airline staff waited for their computers to reboot.

GMR Airports did not immediately respond to a request for comment due to the public holiday in India.

India’s aviation market is among the fastest-growing globally, with domestic air travel projected to double from a record 152 million passengers in 2023 to 300 million, according to government data.
