In a dramatic twist to a suspected missing woman case, police traced a woman who allegedly staged her suicide after attending a wedding in the district.

Priyanka, a resident of Kunigal, had travelled with her mother to Chikkamagaluru for a marriage function on Friday. According to a complaint filed by her husband Rudresh, she went missing shortly after the event.

Belongings found near tank sparked panic

Police discovered her clothes, vanity bag and other personal belongings on the banks of a tank near Kalkere on the Belur–Hassan Road. Fearing suicide or foul play, officers launched an intensive search operation in and around the water body.

Despite several hours of searching, no body was found.

Further investigation, including CCTV footage analysis and mobile phone tracking, revealed that Priyanka had allegedly changed her dress and slippers in a nearby forested area. The items were reportedly left behind to create the impression of suicide.

Traced to Kunigal with colleague

Police later traced her to the residence of Devid in Kunigal. Both were reportedly employed at a garment unit. Investigators suspect that Priyanka had planned to elope with Devid, who hails from Bihar.

Priyanka, who has an eight-year-old son, reportedly refused to return home with her husband after being traced. She has since been taken into custody and shifted to a women’s protection and welfare centre for counselling and further proceedings.

Police stated that the matter is under investigation, and necessary legal steps will follow based on statements from all parties involved.

The incident has drawn attention locally, highlighting the emotional strain such cases place on families and communities.
