Concern over misuse and fundraising
In a letter issued by Sister M. Joseph, Superior General of the Missionaries of Charity, the organisation expressed deep concern over individuals and groups allegedly exploiting Mother Teresa’s legacy for financial gain and publicity.
The letter stated that several organisations have been using her name and image without permission, particularly on websites and social media, to solicit funds and organise events.
Legal action likely against violators
The congregation said repeated warnings had failed to curb such practices, prompting the decision to pursue legal action against certain organisations.
It also urged such groups to immediately stop using Mother Teresa’s name and to rename their organisations where necessary.
Archbishop endorses the appeal
The letter has been formally endorsed by the Archbishop of Calcutta, Most Reverend Elias Frank, who acknowledged the seriousness of the issue and supported the call for corrective action.
Church authorities reiterated that protecting the sanctity of Mother Teresa’s legacy is essential.
Rights over name and legacy
The Missionaries of Charity clarified that Mother Teresa had explicitly entrusted all rights related to her name, image, and writings to the Superior General of the congregation through her will and public statements.
The letter also cited her firm stance against the use of her name for fundraising, even for charitable causes, as it conflicted with her beliefs.
