New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday described the proposed implementation of women’s reservation as one of the most significant decisions of the 21st century, calling it a historic step dedicated to “Nari Shakti”.
Addressing the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Sammelan’ at Vigyan Bhawan, the Prime Minister said the country is on the verge of creating a new chapter in its democratic journey, with Parliament set to deliberate on the issue during the special session from April 16 to 18.

Highlighting the importance of the move, Modi said the decision would not only fulfil long-pending demands but also embed social justice into governance and policymaking.

Decades-long demand for reservation
Referring to the long-standing debate around women’s representation, Modi noted that the demand for reservation in Parliament and state Assemblies has persisted for nearly four decades.
He acknowledged that political parties across the spectrum have supported the idea at different points in time, underscoring the need for collective action to bring it to fruition.
The proposed move is linked to the implementation of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, which mandates 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies.
Focus on 2029 implementation
The Prime Minister indicated that there is broad consensus on implementing the law by 2029, aligning with the timeline for the next Lok Sabha elections.
He said a detailed discussion will take place in Parliament beginning April 16 and expressed hope that all political parties will cooperate to ensure the successful rollout of the legislation.
Modi stressed that the effort should transcend political differences and reflect a unified commitment to women’s empowerment.

Appealing for bipartisan support, the Prime Minister said the initiative offers an opportunity for all parties to rise above politics and contribute to a transformative reform.
“With collective efforts, the dignity of Parliament will rise, and women across the country will feel proud,” he said.
The event was attended by several leaders, including Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Union Minister for Women and Child Development Annpurna Devi.
