Meerut: Hitting out at the grand alliance of Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Lok Dal and Bahujan Samaj Party, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday, March 27, coined the alliance with “SARAB” (sharab/liquor) acronym. He said that the consumption of this “alliance liquor” would destroy the health of the state. He urged the people of Uttar Pradesh to stay away from ‘SARAB’ in the polls for the good health of the state.

However, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, attacked Modi back stating that the prime minister was confused about the meaning of the word because of the teleprompter.

Tweeting a picture of a stall selling BJP’s merchandise at the rally venue, Akhilesh stated, “Nothing was done in last five years to curb unemployment, but BJP knows how to run its shop.”

Congress leader Randeep Surjewala hit back at Modi, accusing him of lowering the standard of political discourse by comparing an alliance of three parties to alcohol.

Speaking at a rally on Thursday, March 28, PM Modi said that they have just changed the signboard, the shop remains the same.

“It didn’t take them much time to go from Congress-SP alliance to SP-BSP. But changing the signboard doesn’t mean the shop is new,” Modi said.

With the BJP facing the biggest challenge in UP of winning against the SP, BSP and RLD alliance which contests in 78 of 80 Lok Sabha seats leaving out Amethi and Rae Bareli, PM’s rally in Meerut was aimed at galvanising the BJP’s support base in the western Uttar Pradesh belt, which goes for voting in the first phase of parliamentary polls.
