In a key diplomatic interaction during the Bimstec summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Myanmar junta chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and stressed the urgent need to restore democracy in Myanmar. Modi reiterated India’s backing for a Myanmar-led and Myanmar-owned process toward a peaceful and inclusive transition through credible elections.
Despite the civil war and Western disengagement, India has maintained communication with Myanmar’s military leadership, primarily due to its strategic need to counter insurgent groups in the India-Myanmar border regions.
The meeting also touched upon humanitarian concerns. Modi conveyed condolences for lives lost in Myanmar’s recent earthquake and highlighted India’s continued assistance through Operation Brahma, which includes medical aid, disaster relief, and humanitarian support.
Modi acknowledged Myanmar’s cooperation in the rescue and repatriation of Indian nationals trapped in cyber-scam centers near the Myanmar-Thailand border. Both leaders also emphasized working together to curb transnational crimes, insurgency, and human trafficking across their shared border.
This engagement underscores India’s balanced approach—upholding democratic values while ensuring regional security and strategic interests remain safeguarded.
