KANNUR: In a tragic case highlighting the dangers of moral policing, three men have been remanded in judicial custody after the death of a woman, Raseena, who was found hanging at her home in Kayalode on Tuesday. The area falls under the jurisdiction of the Pinarayi Police Station.

The incident that allegedly led to her suicide occurred on Sunday evening near the Achankara Mosque, where Raseena was seen sitting in a car with a male friend. According to police, the accused — M C Mubsheer (28), K A Faisal (34), and V K Rafnas (24), all residents of Parambayi — forcibly removed the man from the vehicle, assaulted him, and confiscated his mobile phone and tablet.

Police stated that evidence from Raseena’s suicide note directly implicated the three men, leading to their arrest. They were presented in court on Thursday and remanded to judicial custody.

The incident has sparked political outrage. BJP Kannur district president K K Vinod Kumar strongly condemned the attack, calling it a case of moral vigilantism linked to SDPI workers, and questioned how such an incident could occur in Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s home district.

“What wrong did the woman do by speaking to a man?” he asked, accusing SDPI members of orchestrating a mob trial near the CM’s residence. “The man was taken to an SDPI office and assaulted brutally,” he alleged.

The investigation is ongoing.
