TIRUPPUR: Tragedy struck Palladam on Tuesday when a container truck overturned at a busy junction, killing a mother and daughter on the spot. The victims were identified as N Maharani (55) and her daughter S Krithika (35), residents of Arivoli Nagar near Naranapuram.

According to police, the container truck carrying coir was en route from Pollachi to Chennai. Around 3 p.m., the driver, Yogaraj (35) from Virudhunagar, allegedly made a sharp and high-speed turn from Pollachi Road to Tiruppur Road at the Palladam Four Road junction. The truck lost balance and toppled, landing on the two women riding a two-wheeler.

Both women were crushed under the massive container and died instantly. Police rushed to the scene and, with the help of cranes, lifted the container to recover the bodies.

Yogaraj initially fled the accident site, but later surrendered at the Palladam police station, where he is being questioned. Police confirmed the victims were on their way home at the time of the accident. A further probe is ongoing.

Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and announced a compensation of ₹3 lakh each for the victims’ kin.
