Police in Faridabad have arrested a 28-year-old woman after the body of her one-year-old daughter was recovered from a drain in the Palla area earlier this week.
Officials said the child’s post-mortem examination confirmed death by drowning.
Body found by schoolchildren
The case came to light on April 23 when two schoolchildren reportedly noticed the child’s body stuck in an iron mesh along the drain while returning home.
Residents informed police, who reached the spot, recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination.
The shocking discovery left local residents deeply disturbed.
CCTV footage led to arrest
Investigators said CCTV footage from nearby areas showed a woman carrying a child towards the drain around 7.30 am that morning.
In later footage, she was allegedly seen returning alone.
Based on the visuals, police traced the woman to a slum settlement in Dheeraj Nagar and arrested her on Sunday.
Financial distress angle under probe
Police said the accused is originally from Bihar and had been living in Faridabad with her husband for several years.
During questioning, she allegedly cited severe financial hardship and inability to care for her children.
Officials said the deceased toddler was reportedly the youngest among six daughters, while the husband is physically disabled and employed in a private firm.
Case registered
An FIR has been filed under relevant sections related to murder and destruction of evidence.
Police said they are also examining whether any other family members had prior knowledge of the incident.
A tragedy beyond crime
The case has raised painful questions around poverty, mental stress and support systems for vulnerable families.
Authorities said further investigation is underway.
