New Delhi: A Madhya Pradesh minister has drawn a lot of criticism from the opposition for allegedly wedding two frogs to ensure the arrival of rains.
BJP’s Lalita Yadav, the state’s minister for woman and child development allegedly arranged for the ceremony at a temple in Chhattarpur to “appease the rain gods”.
Yadav represents the Chhattarpur constituency, which falls in a region that has been facing a severe drought for the last two years. The practice of marrying frogs to please the gods is an age-old tradition believed to bring about rains. The tradition has, for the most part, vanished from modern day society.
The unique wedding ceremony was witnessed by scores of people who were gathered at the temple premises and later partook in the subsequent feast.
As many consider the practice a superstition, the opposition has accused the minister of indulging in superstitious practices thereby promoting and encouraging superstitious beliefs. The minister has, however, defended her actions saying that it was a “logical tradition” and was required to “balance the environment”.
