Mihir Shah, the primary suspect in the Mumbai BMW hit-and-run incident, has confessed to driving the luxury vehicle during the fatal crash on the morning of July 7, which claimed the life of a woman and injured her husband, according to officials from Worli Police Station investigating the case.

Shah was apprehended from Thane district on Tuesday, two days after the incident where his BMW collided with a two-wheeler, resulting in the death of Kaveri Nakhwa (45), who was riding as a pillion, and injuring her husband Pradeep Nakhwa early Sunday morning.

Following his arrest in Virar, Mumbai Police presented Shah before a metropolitan magistrate court in Dadar, where the 24-year-old was remanded to police custody until July 16.

Rajesh Shah, Shah’s father and a Shiv Sena politician from Palghar district, is also implicated in the case and is presently out on bail.

During police questioning, Shah admitted to being behind the wheel at the time of the crash, but did not disclose when he took over driving. He claimed he abandoned the car at Kala Nagar and fled fearing public backlash, said a police officer speaking to HT.

In court, Mumbai Police requested Shah’s custody, citing attempts to mislead investigators by altering his appearance and possibly destroying the BMW’s number plate. They also alleged Shah evaded questions about his sobriety at the time of the accident.

Additionally, it was reported that Shah communicated with his girlfriend extensively before abandoning the BMW and heading to her residence, prompting speculation of her potential involvement.

The investigation into the incident continues, with police considering further actions, including questioning Shah’s girlfriend in connection with the case.
