A 23-year-old engineering student in Mumbai became the victim of a cyber scam, losing over ₹6 lakh while attempting to find escort services online. The student, who is a research trainee in chemical technology from Tamil Nadu, initiated contact with a fraudster after discovering a WhatsApp number linked to the service on April 4. The scam began with a ₹500 “advance” payment, after which the student was promised an escort along with a driver.
Soon after, the fraudsters asked for additional payments, including ₹3,000, ₹21,000 for a “security deposit,” and ₹32,000 for “insurance fees.” In total, the student transferred ₹6 lakh to the scammers. Realizing he had been duped, he filed a complaint at the Matunga police station. An FIR has been lodged under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita and the Information Technology Act.
This incident highlights the growing threat of cyber fraud in India, with another recent case in Delhi involving a fake investment app scam that defrauded a businessman of ₹16.7 lakh. Cyber crime remains a significant concern as scammers use various tactics to exploit individuals online.
