The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai after incessant heavy rainfall lashed the city, prompting the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to urge residents to stay indoors unless travel is absolutely necessary.
Authorities warned that intense rainfall could continue over the next 24 hours, raising the risk of waterlogging, traffic disruptions and localised flooding in several parts of the city.
IMD issues highest weather warning
The IMD’s red alert indicates the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall and advises residents to exercise maximum caution.
Civic authorities have asked people to avoid venturing out unless essential and to stay away from low-lying areas, waterlogged roads and seafronts as a precautionary measure.
Emergency response teams have been placed on high alert, while disaster management officials are closely monitoring the situation.
BMC urges residents to remain indoors
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has appealed to citizens to remain indoors wherever possible and follow official advisories.
Municipal teams have been deployed to monitor vulnerable locations, clear clogged drains and respond to incidents of waterlogging, fallen trees and traffic disruptions.
Authorities have also urged motorists to drive cautiously and check traffic updates before travelling, as heavy rain may affect road conditions across the city.
Emergency services on alert
The civic body said disaster management personnel, fire services and other emergency agencies are on standby to respond to any rain-related emergencies.
Residents have been advised to avoid rumours, rely only on official weather updates and immediately report emergencies to civic authorities.
With the monsoon remaining active over Maharashtra, officials said they will continue monitoring weather conditions and issue fresh advisories as required to safeguard public safety.
