In a press conference on Sunday, Mumbai Police revealed that the individual arrested in connection with the attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan is believed to be a Bangladeshi national, based on items discovered during the investigation.
According to the police, the assailant, who had entered India illegally, adopted the alias “Vijay Das” upon arrival. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Zone 9, Dixit Gedam, identified the suspect as 30-year-old Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad. He further explained that Shehzad had entered Khan’s residence with the intent to rob.
Gedam stated that initial findings suggest the suspect is of Bangladeshi origin. After crossing the border, he changed his name to Vijay Das. Shehzad had arrived in Mumbai approximately 5-6 months ago, initially staying in the city before moving to the surrounding areas. He was employed at a local housekeeping agency.
On January 16, at around 2 AM, Saif Ali Khan was attacked in his Mumbai home, suffering six stab wounds. He was swiftly transported to Lilavati Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery and was declared stable by doctors. His family, including his wife Kareena Kapoor, their children, and household staff, were present at the time.
The police have seized evidence that points to Shehzad’s Bangladeshi nationality, though further investigations are ongoing. He will be presented in court, and authorities will seek custody for continued questioning.
