Biswanath (Assam): While politicians are engaged in verbal jousts all over the country, reports are coming from Assam that a Muslim man is being abused for ostensibly selling beef.
As per reports, a video of the incident has also come to light, where Shaukat Ali (68) is seen kneeling in slush, begging the assailants to let him go. The authenticity of the video or the affiliations of the attackers, however, cannot be verified.
Sources say that a few locals beat Shaukat Ali (68) in the middle of the road and force-fed him pork as punishment for “selling beef.” In the video, the attackers can be heard asking Shaukat if he has a license to sell beef and if he is from Bangladesh. He was also asked if his name was in the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
Shaukat has reportedly survived the incident and is receiving treatment for his injuries.
The district police have reportedly filed two FIRs in the incident, one by Shaukat’s brother.
While some reports suggest that five people connected to the incident have already been detained, sources say that the police have opened an investigation into the matter and are on the hunt for the people seen in the video.
