The father of Sonam Raghuvanshi, the 24-year-old Indore woman accused of orchestrating her husband’s murder during their honeymoon in Meghalaya, has dismissed all allegations, claiming the charges are fabricated by the police. He has demanded a CBI investigation, expressing mistrust in the Meghalaya Police.
Devi Singh, Sonam’s father, told reporters that his daughter couldn’t have committed such an act. “They got married with both families’ approval. Sonam is innocent. The Meghalaya government has been misleading the public since the beginning,” he said.
He further stated that Sonam wasn’t arrested in Meghalaya, but voluntarily appeared at a dhaba in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday night, from where she called her brother. Police later detained her at the Nandganj Police Station. “She went there on her own. Why would she kill her husband? These are fabricated stories,” Singh asserted.
Sonam was taken into custody almost 10 days after her husband Raja Raghuvanshi’s body was found in a deep gorge in Sohra (Cherrapunjee), Meghalaya. The couple, who had gone on a honeymoon trip, had been missing since May 23.
According to Meghalaya Police, Sonam allegedly conspired with her partner Raj Kushwaha, and hired three contract killers from Madhya Pradesh to eliminate Raja. A tourist guide reportedly saw the couple last with three unidentified men. Raja’s body was discovered on June 2; their scooter was later found abandoned.
So far, three suspects have been arrested, while one remains absconding. Meghalaya DGP Idashisha Nongrang stated that Sonam played an active role in the murder plot.
