New Covid-19 Sub-Variants Detected in India Amid Rising Asian Surge
India has reported a fresh uptick in Covid-19 cases, with 257 new infections recorded nationwide, including 8 cases in Karnataka. Health officials have identified the culprits as two new sub-lineages—LF.7 and NB.1.8—both offshoots of the previously known JN.1 variant.
While no severe symptoms have been reported so far, health authorities are urging public caution. The Karnataka Health Department has already circulated advisories, encouraging preventive measures and alertness, especially in vulnerable populations.
The resurgence follows a similar spike in parts of Asia, with Singapore and Hong Kong issuing public health warnings. Singapore alone reported 14,200 new cases between May 3 and May 16, as per its Ministry of Health.
Although India’s current caseload remains low and manageable, experts warn against complacency, citing the virus’s unpredictable mutation patterns. The public is advised to follow basic safety protocols like mask-wearing in crowded spaces, frequent hand hygiene, and avoiding unnecessary travel if feeling unwell.
Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing that while there’s no cause for alarm, vigilance remains key to avoiding a larger outbreak.
