A newborn baby girl was found abandoned at a bus stand in Andhra Pradesh’s Anakapalli district in the early hours of Thursday. Despite swift action by the police, the infant was declared dead on arrival at a hospital.

The newborn, with her umbilical cord still attached, was discovered around 5 am near the RTC bus complex at Krishnadevi Peta bus stand. Preliminary indications suggest that the delivery may have taken place close to the bathrooms located at the rear of the bus stand premises.

Police rush infant to hospital

Krishnadevi Peta sub-inspector Rushikesh said the police received an alert from local residents early in the morning. Officers immediately rushed to the spot and transported the baby to a nearby hospital in an attempt to save her life.

“Sadly, the newborn was declared dead on arrival,” the sub-inspector said, adding that the infant appeared to have been abandoned shortly after birth.

Investigation underway, CCTV footage examined

Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to identify those responsible for abandoning the baby. CCTV footage from in and around the RTC bus complex is being examined to trace the movements of individuals in the area during the early morning hours.

Officials said efforts are also being made to establish the circumstances under which the delivery occurred and whether medical assistance could have saved the infant.

Concerns over child abandonment

The incident has sparked concern among residents and child welfare activists, highlighting ongoing issues related to unsafe childbirth, lack of access to maternal healthcare, and abandonment of newborns in public spaces.

Authorities have urged anyone with information related to the case to come forward and assist the investigation.
