The body of a newborn boy was found in a toilet in the triage area of the emergency department at Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS) in Lucknow, prompting a police investigation.

A sanitation worker spotted the baby at around 8.45 am on Monday and alerted hospital officials. The newborn was found with the placenta still attached. Police reached the hospital after being informed by the administration and took the body into custody.

Police examine CCTV footage

Police are reviewing CCTV footage from the emergency and triage areas to determine when the newborn was brought into the toilet and who left him there.

Investigators are also trying to establish whether the baby was born inside the hospital or was brought there from elsewhere. The circumstances surrounding the newborn’s death remain unclear.

Postmortem to establish cause of death

RMLIMS spokesperson Dr Bhuvan Chand Tiwari said the exact time and cause of death would be established through a postmortem examination.

The investigation is expected to establish how long the newborn remained in the toilet and the circumstances leading to his death. Police are examining available evidence, including CCTV footage, before drawing conclusions.

The incident has raised concern as authorities continue to investigate how a newborn came to be found dead inside a hospital facility.
