A heartbreaking incident unfolded at the Vellore Government Medical College Hospital on May 24, when the thumb of a newborn baby was accidentally severed—allegedly due to the negligence of a senior nurse. The baby was born to Vimalraj (30) and Nivetha (24), residents of Mullipalayam, Tamil Nadu.

The injury reportedly occurred while the nurse was attempting to remove medical tape from the infant’s hand to replace a glucose needle. According to the parents, the nurse mishandled a pair of scissors during the process.

In a shocking claim, the baby’s father, Vimalraj, said the nurse was distracted by her mobile phone at the time of the procedure. “She wasn’t paying attention. I wasn’t even allowed to see my baby for more than 90 minutes after it happened. This is pure negligence,” he said, visibly distraught.

The hospital authorities immediately transferred the baby to Stanley Government Hospital in Chennai, where he is undergoing emergency treatment. The nurse involved, despite her 15 years of experience, has drawn widespread criticism.

Vellore District Collector Subbulaxmi has ordered a full enquiry and assured stringent action. “The use of scissors was not necessary for this procedure. If it’s confirmed that the nurse was using her phone, the strictest punishment will be enforced,” she stated.

The internal investigation is ongoing as the infant continues to receive care in Chennai.
