MUNNAR: Authorities have imposed a total night travel ban on the Munnar Gap Road, a key section of the Kochi-Dhanushkodi National Highway, from June 13 to 17 following persistent rainfall and increased risk of rockfalls and landslides.
The decision, announced in light of the IMD’s orange alert for Idukki district, is aimed at ensuring public safety as strong winds and heavy rains continue to batter the region. Officials have also prohibited vehicle parking along both sides of the Gap Road day and night, citing heightened danger.
The route, which falls under the Munnar Sub-Division, is particularly vulnerable to road blockages due to falling rocks during monsoon spells.
The District Collector has tasked the District Police Chief, Devikulam Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Regional Transport Officer (Idukki), Incident Commander, and Tahsildars of Devikulam and Udumbanchola with strictly enforcing the travel and parking restrictions during this period.
Travelers are advised to use alternate routes and stay updated on official advisories.
