New Delhi: Chief Justice of India SA Bobde has said that the petition of one of the four Nirbhaya convicts challenging the rejection of mercy should be listed on “top priority”, if the execution is on February 1. The CJI has asked the lawyer to approach the court registry.

Following the rejection of his Mercy petition by President of India, convict Mukesh Singh through his lawyer had asked the Court to list his petition challenging the rejection ‘urgently’. The petition filed on Saturday asked for the cancellation of the death warrant for February 1for the hanging.

Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, Akshay Singh and Pawan Gupta are to be hanged at 6 a.m. on Saturday in connection to the 2012 gang-rape and murder that left the nation hanging its head in shame. The curative petitions of two of the convicts were rejected earlier this month and their death warrant was signed for January 22.

Mukesh Singh had filed a mercy petition.

After President Ram Nath Kovind dismissed Mukesh Singh’s mercy plea, a new date was announced.
