Odisha trio sentenced for smuggling ganja-infused chocolates
A Villupuram court has handed down a 10-year prison sentence to three individuals from Odisha for trafficking and distributing ganja chocolates. The special judge for the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, A Packia Jothi, also imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh on each of the accused.
The convicts—P Ajay Kumar, 30, U Ugresan Barik, 29, and T Balaram Barik, 30—originally from Odisha but residing in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, were involved in smuggling 5.4 kg of ganja-infused chocolates from Odisha to Tamil Nadu. According to the prosecution, the illegal shipment was transported on December 24, 2022.
The case against the trio was part of a crackdown on drug trafficking, which has seen an increasing number of similar incidents across the state. These individuals had reportedly been using various means to distribute the illicit chocolates, targeting unsuspecting buyers. Their arrest and conviction mark a significant achievement in the ongoing efforts of authorities to curb drug-related crimes.
The court’s decision reflects the serious stance taken against narcotics offenses, underscoring the importance of stringent action under the NDPS Act. The smuggling and sale of such substances carry severe legal consequences, as demonstrated in this case.
