A woman police constable has won widespread admiration after she stepped in to clear a massive traffic jam and ensure the safe passage of an ambulance—while carrying her infant child and despite being off duty.
A moment that defined duty and humanity
Amudala Jaya Shanti, posted at Rangampeta Police Station, was returning home after completing her shift when she encountered severe traffic congestion near Samalkota railway station road during the Sankranti rush. Trapped in the jam was an ambulance struggling to move forward.
Though the area did not fall under her jurisdiction and it was well beyond her duty hours, Shanti immediately intervened.
Balancing motherhood and public service
Speaking to The Times of India, Shanti said she was travelling with her two-and-a-half-year-old child when she noticed the ambulance. She first handed over her baby to fellow passengers and began clearing traffic on her own. For nearly 40 minutes, she managed the congested stretch single-handedly.
When her child woke up, Shanti continued regulating traffic while carrying the baby in her arms. She persisted for nearly two hours until additional police personnel arrived after being alerted about the situation.
Her determination ensured that the ambulance finally passed through safely—an act that drew praise from commuters and the public alike.
Senior officers acknowledge service
D Narasimha Kishore, Superintendent of Police, East Godavari district, appreciated Shanti’s exemplary conduct and announced a reward for her dedication and presence of mind.
A powerful message for society
Shanti’s actions have resonated widely, symbolising compassion, responsibility and courage. Her story stands as a reminder that public service often goes beyond uniforms and duty hours—and that motherhood and professional commitment can coexist with remarkable grace.
